Nigel Stepney...

The biggest espionage case in F1 history, involving Ferrari, McLaren, and Renault.

Background

Nigel Stepney, Ferrari's former head of performance development, was unhappy with team changes after Ross Brawn's departure. In February 2007, he publicly stated he was looking for opportunities elsewhere.

The Stolen Documents

Stepney passed 780 pages of Ferrari technical documents to McLaren's chief designer, Mike Coughlan. Coughlan's wife took them to a photocopy shop near Woking, where an employee noticed they were Ferrari confidential and tipped off the team.

The Investigation

Ferrari filed criminal complaints in Italy and England. The FIA launched an investigation. McLaren claimed no other employees knew about the documents, but emails between drivers Fernando Alonso, Pedro de la Rosa, and Coughlan later proved otherwise.

The Punishment

Aftermath

Renault was later investigated for possessing McLaren data from 2006-2007 but escaped penalty. The scandal led to stricter technical regulations and data protection measures in F1.
